Traditional Online Auction vs. Online Penny Auction
A traditional online auction, like eBay, provides users with the opportunity to compete for the purchase of an item.  Each individual interested in the item will place a bid, which will increase the price.  Once the auction timer runs out, the person with the highest bid is declared the winner.
So then, what is a penny auction?  Like the name implies it is an online auction where the winner is determined by the highest bidder.  But there are two main differences between traditional online auction sites and penny auction sites.

Unlike a traditional online auction site, penny auctions require you to pay for each bid you place on an item.  These sites offer bid packages that typically range from .10 to $1.00 for each bid.  The auction often starts at $0.00 and each time a person places a bid, the price increases by one penny.

Unlike a traditional auction, the clock never stops as long as a person is bidding on an item.  Auction timers on a penny auction site are extended each time a person places a bid within the final seconds of an auction.  This allows other bidders who are interested in the item to place a bid.  The auction ends when bidding ends.  As long as there are bidders the auction will continue.
